INSTRUCTIONS
In this lesson, I will learn how to use Visual Analysis to analyze a poster. I will divide it into three steps: Observation, Analysis and Interpretation
OBSERVATION
<Slums Breed Crime>
Designer: Lester Beall
When I looked at the poster, I saw a big red hand in the center of the picture, and these big hands were imprisoned in chains. This big hand is the only color element in the whole picture, everything else is black and white. The caption reads "Slums Breed Crime" at the top of the screen, and "United States Housing Authority" at the bottom of the screen, in a smaller font size. There's a dilapidated building in the background with a car and some people in front of it
ANALYSIS
When I looked at this poster, I found the following design principles:
[emphasis] The background of the work is black and white, except for a large red hand that represents the criminal.
[Symbol] The big red hand and chain in the picture are the symbols of criminals. The background - the picture being taken away by the police also expresses the meaning of the criminal.
[Word and Image] The title "Slums Breed Crime" expresses the theme of this poster: poverty leads to crime, it says "No poverty." At the bottom of the picture is the caption "United States Housing authority, "indicating that this is an AD for the United States Housing authority.
INTERPRETATION
I found some of Lester Beall's other designs.
Image A:<Cross Out Slums>
1941 designed by Lester Beall
Image B:<Running water - Rural Electrification Administration>
1937 designed by Lester Beall
This is a 1941 advertisement for the United States Housing Authority, I find the other works designed by Lester Beall (Image A & B), a leading advocate of American modernist graphic designers, whose work is often characterized by clear and concise typography. He studied the dynamic visual forms of the European avant-garde, incorporating its composite parts into his own aesthetic and formative graphic design applications for commercial and industrial design. The goal of theses posters is to increase the number of rural Americans who will provide electricity to their homes and raise public awareness of the benefits of electricity. In designer Lester Beall's work, he often makes use of angular elements, iconic arrows, reflected photographs and dynamic shapes, which are also the essence of his personal style.
