Exercise - Environment Design Fundamentals

Exercise - Submission

Project 1 - Exterior and Landscape Design

Week 6
I finished the bar's basic shape and the top-down zoning this week. Mr. Kannan told me it needs more 'bar-like' design elements because the current look is a bit too generic.

Week 6 - Exterior Design

Week 7
"This week, I added a giant bottle structure and a large wine glass logo. Mr. Kannan mentioned that it looks better and encouraged me to continue refining it. However, he noted that the color palette is currently too gray and lacks contrast. And also the house is too 'flat'.

Week 7 - Exterior Design

Week 7
I added more details, such as small props on the counter, and applied gradients and thickness to various areas to give the building more depth and make it look less flat. Mr. Kannan asked about the background and advised me to continue adjusting the color palette.

Week 8 - Exterior Design

Week 9
I have added a new background setting the bar on a grassland with karst topography. Additionally, I adjusted the saturation to ensure the building no longer looks so gray and dull.

Project 2 - Interior and Set Design

Week 10
This week, I started working on the interior design. I used color blocking to sketch out the rough layout. Mr. Kannan pointed out some structural inconsistencies, such as the tables and chairs being too close to the stairs, and mentioned that my tonal values (black, white, and gray) still need improvement. And I also I need add more props in enrich the interior.

Week 10 - Interior Design

Week 11
I have added more details to the interior and increased the color saturation this week.

Project 2 - Final Submission

Project 3-1 - 3D Modelling

Week 12
This week, I completed the 3D modeling of the house in Blender. Ms. Kannan mentioned that it looks good and provided further suggestions regarding the materials and textures for the next steps.

Week 12 - White model

Week 13/14
This week, I added more details to the model and applied materials to the surfaces. I used basic solid color textures and applied gradients with the brush tool to make the colors look richer and more vibrant.

Self-Reflection

Looking back at the entire process, the core challenge was managing the relationship between detail and overall structure. From the initial concept, most of the effort went into breaking the "flatness" of the space. Whether it was adding structural thickness to the exterior or adjusting the color contrast in the interior, the goal was to create layers within the environment.

The transition from 2D sketches to 3D modeling in Blender was a turning point. Many layouts that seemed functional on paper had to be re-evaluated for scale and logic in a 3D space. This series of exercises was largely about figuring out how to use textures and lighting to enrich a basic model, while continuously filtering out generic design elements based on the feedback received.
