Self-Reflection
Experience:
This research project turned out to be a much more demanding experience than I initially expected. At the start of the semester, I thought the tasks would mainly focus on reading articles and writing short reflections. I didn’t realize that we would need to conduct a complete research process, including defining research questions, designing a methodology, and collecting primary data. Because I had limited experience with academic research, especially in survey design and data analysis, I felt quite unsure at the beginning.
Deciding on a research topic was also challenging. I am interested in many aspects of digital learning and educational games, so narrowing it down to a specific focus took some time. After reviewing the course requirements and receiving feedback, I chose to study how interactive features in educational games influence learners’ engagement. This topic felt relevant to me because I have personally used educational games and programming-based learning tools before, and I was curious about what actually keeps users motivated.
Throughout the semester, I gradually learned how a research project is developed step by step. Task 1 helped me clarify the research direction and objectives. In Task 2, I practiced reading academic articles more critically and learned how to summarize key points instead of just describing the content. Task 3 was the most difficult stage, as it involved creating survey questions, distributing them, and analyzing the responses. Although the process was sometimes stressful—especially when interpreting the data—I felt a strong sense of achievement after completing everything.
Observation:
One interesting observation from the survey results was how much users value interactive feedback in educational games. Many respondents mentioned that instant responses, such as hints, progress indicators, or visual feedback, helped them stay focused and correct mistakes more efficiently. This showed me that learners are not only looking for correct answers, but also for guidance during the learning process.
Another observation was the difference in preferences among users with different personality traits. More outgoing users seemed to enjoy interactive and responsive features more strongly, while introverted or neutral users rated these features as helpful but not essential. This made me realize that a single design approach may not suit all learners, and flexibility is important in educational game design.
Findings:
Based on the data analysis and literature review, I found that most users prefer learning platforms that are simple, clear, and easy to use. Overly complex interfaces or excessive features can actually reduce engagement. Users also placed high importance on clarity, trust, and usability. Features that allow personalization, such as adjustable difficulty or customized feedback, were seen as especially valuable.
Overall, this research project helped me develop important skills in academic writing, data collection, and critical analysis. It also gave me a deeper understanding of how design choices affect user experience in digital learning environments. I am very grateful to Dr. Wong for the continuous guidance and constructive feedback throughout the semester, which greatly supported me in completing this research successfully.
