Task2: Design Priciples | Task 2(Visual Analysis) (tianyaoqwer.blogspot.com)

INSTRUCTION

After completing Task 2, we were asked to create our own design posters whilst using the design principles we had previously learnt. The UN Sustainable Development Goal that I chose was number 2, which is NO poverty. In my design I have tried to think about different aspects such as how to do it, the consequences of poverty, and the disasters of poverty.

SKETCH

I made four sketches, each representing a different theme.

Sketch 1 [Cooperation]
In the first draft, I want to express the theme of No poverty through the way that the police help the poor. At the same time, I drew two big hands shaking hands on the back, indicating cooperation.

Sketch 2 [Poverty Cause Disaster]
I think poverty limits people's self-development, so I use words as symbols of bondage. In the background, I drew the silhouettes of two people who were arguing, representing the Disaster. The overall red and black color scheme gives the impression of evil.

Sketch 3 [Poverty Breeds Hate]
The theme I want to express in the third draft is "poverty is not the fault of the rich" and "poverty is the responsibility of society".
I used the big knife in my hand as a symbol of the hatred of the poor, and the man running away below represented the rich

Sketch 4 [Start Your Business]
I believe that increasing employment is one of the solutions to poverty. The people who are reaching out represent entrepreneurship and opportunities, and the cranes that are rising represent buildings and wealth.

I made four sketches, and I chose sketch 4 as my final design.  Because I found sketch3 to be much easier to create, while the other options were too time-consuming. And I think the values conveyed in draft 3 are more in line with my definition of poverty.

RATIONALE

The theme of the poster is “Poverty Breeds Hate", and I think that by expressing the dangers of poverty, which causes hatred and racial discrimination between societies, I can warn people to take the issue of poverty seriously.

In my design, in order to express this theme, I drew a big red hand holding a knife and stabbing a group of rich people wearing suits and bowler hats. Where the red color of the large hand represents anger and the pattern on the knife is a view of a slum.

In task 2, I studied the work of American designer Lester Beall, who often uses graphic silhouettes along with real photographs to create intuitive and simple designs. The red knife in my design mimics Lester Beall's approach.

In my design for this piece, I tried to use the following design principles.

[Emphasis] I think it is important to emphasize the hatred that comes with poverty, so I have placed the knife in the center of the image and enlarged it, and I have used a large area of red, which is different from the theme color, to make sure that the viewer notices the knife at first glance.

[Movement] As you can see in the image, the sharp blade creates a downward trend, and I created a reverse trend on the sides to create the feeling that the knife is falling and pushing away from the surrounding objects.

[color] Red and yellow are similar in hue, and the color scheme of neighboring colors makes for a harmonious image. The red color represents anger and is used extensively on the large knife.

[symbol] the red knife is accompanied by a picture of a slum, representing the angry poor.

[word and image] The accompanying text "Poverty is not the fault of the rich" is used as a subheading to show that the problem of poverty is not to be blamed on the rich, but to make the reader think about other factors that lead to poverty, such as the distribution of social resources or the government. The accompanying text "Poverty Breeds Hate" as a headline, with a larger font size, directly expresses the theme, and is concise and clear.

FEEDBACK

WEEK5:

1. The links under Reference photos are too messy, change them to photo number+title, then embedded the link in the photo title. Label your reference photos with the number of each photo.

2. Add a narrative to the reference photos, why you chose them, and how they inspired your work.

3. Your sketches are more like finished works than sketches. Keep the existing ones and add sketches of each existing sketches.

WEEK6:

1. Add comments to each draft

SELF-REFLECTION

I did well in the Designing Posters class. Having mastered design principles, graphic typography and colour schemes, I was able to create attractive posters. Through the course I have improved my understanding of contrast, balance and repetition, improved the layout of text and images as well as learning to choose appropriate colour schemes. I am satisfied with my performance and look forward to continuing to demonstrate my abilities in future design projects.
